In 1990 we, Jay and Lori Erckenbrack, started a company to produce jellies and syrups from Minnesota's own native berries. We also started marketing Minnesota's own native grain which is Wild Rice. 20 years later, we have 43 other Minnesota produced food items. Although when we started the company we knew we wanted to produce wines from those same native berries, it took 5 years for us to find someone who would teach us the fine art of making wine and help set up all the Federal and State licenses that are required. We also set up berry buying programs, similiar to the ones already in place for Wild Rice, in several Native American communities around the state as well as in our own local community. The honey used in our Honeywine is a light clover honey that we procure from 3 different producers here in Minnesota. In October of 1995 the first berries went into the vats and at the same time honeywine was also being fermented.
The rest as they say is wine history. In 1995 there were only 5 other wineries in the state and currently there are about 40. The timing was perfect as the industry and the demand for Minnesota wine was just starting and it has been growing ever since.
